A woman died after being struck by a vehicle on Wednesday in southeast Fresno and hours later police announced the arrest of a driver who is accused of leaving the accident scene.

On Friday, the Fresno County Coroner identified the woman as Nicole Stewart, 41, of Fresno.

Fermin Castellanos, 50, of Fresno, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and fleeing the scene of a collision involving injury.

A dark blue Ford Explorer and the suspect were found by investigators from the Collision Reconstruction Unit, Fresno Police Lt. Steve Card said, through “some solid investigation work.”

About 6:18 p.m., officers were called to Butler Avenue, west of Winery Avenue.

Stewart had suffered major injuries. She was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where she died.

She was not walking in a crosswalk, Card said.

Police said the driver apparently stopped the vehicle only momentarily, then fled.
