Mother, son killed at Fresno apartment complex died of stab wounds, police say

A man and his mother killed at a Fresno apartment complex died of stab wounds, police said Friday night.

Matthew Keller, 29, was found bleeding from his head when police arrived shortly after 9:30 a.m. at a grass strip outside a unit at the Casas Blancas Apartments on Marks Avenue between Clinton and McKinley avenues west of Highway 99.

Police initially did not release the cause of death but later confirmed he was found with stab wounds on his upper body and that he died at the scene.

Inside the apartment, Keller’s mother, Joanne, 48, also was found with stab wounds. She also died at the scene.

There were few additional details, but police said there were no outstanding suspects.

A disturbance was heard inside before the man was found, police said, and multiple callers reported they heard a man yelling in the moments before officers arrived.

Neighbors huddled outside their apartments and in nearby courtyards in the Spanish-style complex as investigators worked the scene earlier Friday, murmuring about the apparent slayings.

Behind crime scene tape, four or five detectives gathered near the apartment where the woman died. The man’s body was blocked from view by plastic sheeting.

A distraught family member who arrived broke down as he spoke into a cell phone.

“She gone,” he said. “I’m sorry to tell you on the phone, but they are blasting it on Facebook.”

He broke into tears and was consoled by a detective.

More police sped to the scene amid reports that more emotionally upset family members were arriving.
