Man walking on tracks killed by train Friday in central Fresno

A 47-year-old man died after he was hit by an Amtrak train near Belmont Avenue and Diana Street in central Fresno on Friday afternoon.

The conductor of the Amtrak train told Fresno police he could see the man crossing the tracks in the distance around 3:30 p.m. The conductor sounded his horn and when the man did not get off the tracks, he braked the train to slow it.

The man suffered significant injuries. He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where he died at 4:25 p.m.

Witnesses told officers that the man was frequently seen in the neighborhood.

The identity of the man has not been released.
