Elderly woman’s body found in southeast Fresno canal
Fresno police are investigating the discovery of an 84-year-old woman’s body in a canal Thursday morning.
The body was found by irrigation workers near Chestnut and Jensen avenues and removed by the Fresno County Sheriff’s dive team.
Police spokesman Joe Gomez said there is no initial information that foul play is involved. The woman’s family came to the scene and identified her. According to her family, the woman would often go for walks on the canal and went out Wednesday afternoon for a walk. When she did not return, they searched for her but could not find her.
There were no visible signs of injury to her body, and the cause of death will be determined by the Fresno County Coroner, Gomez said.
It is the second time in less than a month that a body has been discovered in one of the city’s canals. In late April, firefighters pulled the body of Jesse Lopez Jr. from a canal at Millbrook and McKinley avenues.
