Update: Coroner ID’s man who drowned in a Fresno County canal. Witnesses said he fell

Deputies with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a drowning Saturday evening in Fresno County.

Deputies responded at 7 p.m. to South Newmark and East Annandale avenues in Sanger after receiving a call from witnesses about a man that had fallen inside the canal, Lt. Mike George said.

The man — identified by the coroner as James Cunningham, 49, of Fresno. — was found and was pulled from the canal. Life-saving measures were performed but Cunningham was pronounced dead at the scene, George said.

No foul play is suspected, deputies said.
