Crews are working to recover the body of an 84-year-old man who went under at Millerton Lake Sunday morning, said Ranger Supervisor Steve Barber.

The man was attempting to swim about 50 yards to a boat where friends and family were waiting when he went under around 10:50 a.m., Barber said.

Rescue crews are working on recovering his body in the remote area of East Bay, near Sky Harbour Road.

Sonar equipment to scan the bed of the lake is being used. Water depth is between 20 and 50 feet and water visibility is low, Barber said.
