Salvation Army plans school backpack giveaways

Salvation Army received a $12,500 donation from Educational Employees Credit Union to pay for its third annual backpack and school supplies giveaway.

The first giveaway was July 22 in Tulare. Upcoming giveaways are scheduled at Salvation Army events Aug. 4 in Hanford, Aug. 6 in Visalia, beginning Aug. 7 in both Fresno and Clovis and Aug. 8 in Merced.

Many of The Salvation Army back-to-school events require pre-registration. Contact the local Salvation Army office for sign-up details and distribution times.

Dravecky to speak at Hanford fundraiser

Dave Dravecky, former San Francisco Giants pitcher, will speak to guests during the 29th annual Charity Gala, hosted by Adventist Health’s Central Valley Health Foundation, on Oct. 5 in Hanford. Dravecky was diagnosed with cancer in 1988 that eventually resulted in the amputation of his pitching arm. Proceeds from the event will go toward purchasing a tomosynthesis machine for the center.

Club 50 seeking new members

Club 50, a program sponsored by Kaweah Delta Health Care District for adults age 50 and older, is accepting new members. Located at the Boys and Girls Club of Visalia, the program promotes healthy living through fitness and meets the needs of mature adults seeking optimal health and functional fitness. Club membership is $40 annually and entitles members to participate in club activities Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. A limited number of memberships are available.

Fair entertainers wanted

The Tulare County Fair is seeking applications from local entertainers interested in performing at the fair Sept. 13-17. Acts must be appropriate for fairgoers of all ages. Applications can be found at tcfair.org and must be received by Aug. 4.

Poverello House fundraiser

Hot Summer Nights will be held 6-11 p.m. Aug. 5 at Toca Madera Winery, 36140 Avenue 9 in Madera. The event features live music, food and wine. Tickets cost $35 and proceeds benefit the Poverello House.

Old Timers picnic

The 27th annual “Old Timers Picnic” will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 19 at the Camp Edison Tanager Campground at Shaver Lake. The event is open to anyone who grew up near Big Creek or Shaver Lake. Hear live history, view familiar old photos and tour the new exhibits at the Sierra Historical Museum: “Hydro in the Central Sierra,” profiling family life in the area.
