Six people were left homeless Friday night after a condominium fire in east-central Fresno, city Battalion Chief Tony Escobedo said.

Frefighters responded about 7:40 p.m. to the 4800 block of East McKinley Avenue. No injuries were reported.

The fire is suspected to have started inside a washing machine on the first floor of the two-story building, Escobedo said.

Flames, up to 25 feet high, quickly worked their way to the second floor. There also was severe smoke damage to the upper floor and to a lesser extent to a neighboring condominium.

The Red Cross is working to provide temporary shelter, Escobedo said.

Firefighters were unaware of any smoke alarms being triggered in the complex, said Escobedo, who emphasized the importance of the devices along with an evacuation plan and early notification to the Fire Department.
