A woman was killed and her husband injured when a boat struck a rock and sank Friday at Pine Flat Lake.

Both initially were taken to the Trimmer Springs Marina, Fresno County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Smith said, with the woman appearing to have suffered fatal injuries.

The man, Smith said, suffered moderate injuries and was flown via Skylife helicopter to Community Regional Medical Center.

Both are in their early 70s, the sheriff’s office said. Their names had not been released.

The accident was reported between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Crews responded toward the back of the lake after the boat sank, Smith said, and the couple were found on the shore.

Said Smith: “It was hard to get to them.”

The investigation was to continue into at least Saturday, with the sheriff’s dive team and boating unit planning to work to recover and examine the boat.
