A 10-year-old girl is in critical condition and undergoing surgery after police say she was hit by a car while crossing Tulare Avenue near Seventh Street in southeast Fresno on Thursday afternoon.

Police Capt. Anthony Martinez said the girl was walking with her father around 3 p.m. when she may have run out into traffic. The driver of the car remained at the scene and has been cooperative.

Martinez said alcohol or drugs do not appear to have been a factor.

Several people walking on the sidewalk nearby, as well as a few other drivers, stopped to help the girl until police arrived, Martinez said. She was rushed into surgery at Community Regional Medical Center.

Tulare between First Street and Cedar Avenue will remain closed until the investigation is completed, Martinez said, which will be at least two hours.
