Líder latino del Congreso: Harris trabajará por regularización de migrantes indocumentados

El congresista de California Pete Aguilar, presidente de Caucus Demócrata de la Cámara Baja y el latino de más alto rango en el Congreso, aseguró este miércoles que si Kamala Harris llega a la presidencia “luchará por caminos hacia la ciudadanía” para los migrantes indocumentados en el país.

En un discurso en la Convención Nacional Demócrata el día en que el tema de la inmigración tiene un rol central, Aguilar aseguró que el candidato republicano Donald Trump “nunca entenderá” la visión de la candidata y vicepresidenta Kamala Harris, que mañana dará su discurso de aceptación de la nominación en Chicago.

“Lo único que él (Trump) entiende es caos y división. Habla de separar a las familias estadounidenses, enfrentar vecino contra vecino y comunidades contra comunidades”, señaló Aguilar.

“No tenemos que elegir entre una frontera segura y la construcción del Estados Unidos para todos. Con la presidenta Harris podremos tener ambos”, aseguró el congresista californiano.

Del mismo modo, el legislador consideró que Harris buscará un camino para la ciudadanía para aquellos inmigrantes que viven, trabajan y contribuyen a este país, porque “creemos que nuestra nación es más fuerte cuando mantenemos a nuestra familias unidas”.

“Nuestra Unión es más perfecta cuando los Soñadores se convierten en doctores, maestros, trabajadores de la construcción o miembros de nuestras Fuerzas Armadas”, aseguró Aguilar en referencia a los beneficiarios del programa DACA, una acción ejecutiva que da un estatus legal pero no camino a la ciudadanía a los migrantes que llegaron de manera irregular al país cuando eran menores de edad.

Aguilar aseguró que los votantes latinos saben lo que está en juego en las elecciones de noviembre si gana Trump.

El Congreso no ha aprobado una reforma migratoria integral que permita regularizar a los más de 11 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados desde el segundo mandato de la presidencia de Barack Obama (2013-2017), cuando un grupo de ocho senadores de ambos partidos intentó una reforma migratoria con un camino para la ciudadanía.

La división en el Congreso, que podría cambiar en las elecciones de noviembre, y el discurso antiinmigrante de facciones conservadoras, ha impedido un acuerdo desde entonces.

“Our Union is more perfect when Dreamers become doctors, teachers, construction workers or members of our Armed Forces,” Aguilar said in reference to the beneficiaries of the DACA program, an executive action that grants legal status but not a path to citizenship to migrants who arrived in the country illegally when they were minors.

Aguilar said that Latino voters know what is at stake in the November elections if Trump wins.

Congress has not approved comprehensive immigration reform to regularize the more than 11 million undocumented immigrants since Barack Obama’s second term in office (2013-2017), when a group of eight senators from both parties attempted immigration reform with a path to citizenship.

The division in Congress, which could change in the November elections, and the anti-immigrant rhetoric of conservative factions, have prevented an agreement since then.
