Lodi’s Middle College High takes home San Joaquín County’s 41st Academic Decathlon
Lodi Unified School District’s Middle College High School takes first in the 41st annual San Joaquín County Academic Decathlon competition that drew teams from 12 county high schools.
Middle College High received the Dave Sorgent Winners’ Cup and will compete in the State Academic Decathlon Championship in March.
The competition, hosted by the San Joaquín County Office of Education (SJCOE), had a hybrid format this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The competition began with the essay event on Jan. 18, followed by an online speech and interview contest on Jan. 19-20. The competition’s objective testing events continued virtually on Jan. 31 and Feb. 2, where competitors showcased their knowledge of art, economics, literature, mathematics, music, science, and social science.
On Feb. 5, the teams took part in in-person Super Quiz competition and awards ceremony at the SJCOE campus in Stockton. Only participants and coaches were allowed with no spectators.
This year, the theme was ‘Water: A Most Essential Resource.’
Schools can field multiple teams, but only one Division I team can compete from each school. Each nine-member team consists of three students in each of three categories based on grade point average: Honors (3.75 – 4.0+), Scholastic (3.0 – 3.74), and Varsity (0.0 – 2.99).
