Fiesta Navideña has become a fashionable tradition for almost 5 decades.

If you walked into the Fresno Fields by Wedgewood Sunday morning expecting to hear mariachi music, see a mini version of a Mexican Christmas and watch models dance to different eras of music, then you were at the 47th Fiesta Navideña.

The tradition organized by the League of Mexican American Women is part of the group’s golden anniversary efforts to raise $50,000 for scholarships.

“I welcome you to celebrate our culture,” said league president Martha Espinosa-Kroll. “You will see that through the music of mariachi, in the centerpieces, in las posadas.”

The sold-out event featured music by Mariachi Universal, a performance by Los Niños de Aztlán, a silent auction, and a fashion show.

The Three Wise Men showed up at the end to distribute candy.

Lilia González Chávez, who coordinated the celebration, said the Betty Rodríguez scholarships will benefit local students.

“We want to raise $50,000 in scholarships for our 50th year,” she said.

Among the models was Fresno City Council President Nelson Esparza, who strutted the stage with his daughter Dania.
