The currency at Sunnyside High graduation was $490,000 worth of scholarships
The memory of the late Tim Liles, the veteran educator who died of brain cancer in September 2020, continues to thrive at Sunnyside High School.
There were three scholarships totaling $4,500 given out in the name of the former Sunnyside High principal. Plus, his name was mentioned several times during the school’s 21st graduation ceremony at the Save Mart Center on Tuesday (June 7).
This year’s recipient of the $2,500 Liles scholarship is Kaylee Gudino, a Doctor’s Academy graduate who is headed to UCLA this fall.
Scholarships that fuel a student’s future plans were plentiful at Sunnyside this year. Principal Michele Anderson announced that the Class of 2022 has received more than $490,000 in scholarships. That averages to almost $750 for each of the 652 graduates.
Four of this year’s graduates, including Luisa Torrabla, are Dell Scholars who receive a $20,000 scholarship, a laptop and a support network. Torrable will attend Fresno State to study biology.
Sunnyside High now has 66 overall Dell Scholars, the most of any high school in the nation.
Krista Faith González, also a Doctor’s Academy graduate and a valedictorian, picked up a $20,000 Golden One Bank Scholarship and a $2,000 CSF scholarship. She is headed to Cornell University to major in communications with a minor in biology.
There were 69 valedictorians, including nine who graduated summa cum laude with GPAs of more than 4.3. Among them were Gwendolyne Kesley Aguilar, Liliana Elorza, and Kaylee Noemi Gudino.
With this year’s graduates, Sunnyside High now has 13,401 alumni.
