University High takes the drama out of its Fresno County Academic Decathlon title
University High School is a dynasty in the making.
For the eighth time in nine years, University claimed the Fresno County Academic Decathlon with ease, amassing 43,306.2 points in this year’s competition. Clovis North was a distant second with 33,703.2 points.
Its 10 overall titles is second only to Edison High’s 19. Edison, which has not fielded a team the last two years, was the last school to defeat University.
This year’s competition was held virtually, including Saturday’s Super Quiz and awards ceremony, because of the pandemic. Last year’s event was also held virtually.
Olivia Lin was impressive, winning the top individual title with 9,057.6 points. Second was teammate Mia Uller (8,480.2 points), followed by Clovis North’s Linda Do (7,407.7 points).
The two repeated their finish from last year’s competition, which was also virtual. Lin is a senior; and, Uller a junior.
Lin was the top competitor in six of the 10 academic decathlon categories: Speech, music, arts, economics, math, and, essay. She tied with Uller for first in social science.
Uller also took firsts in science and language/literature.
University will represent Fresno at the state competition March 1-12. That event will be held virtually.
Sanger High was third overall with 32,290.4 points.
