Boxer Richard Torrez Jr. vows to give fans an “electrifying” fight this Friday
Reflecting on his professional debut in Fresno back in March, Tulare’s 2020 Olympic Silver medal boxer Richard Torrez Jr. looks forward to his second fight Friday (July 15) evening at Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula.
He takes on Roberto Zavala Jr. in a six-round heavyweight contest. Torrez’s fight will lead off the ESPN telecast at 6 p.m.
“You know, I think my debut broke through a lot of different things I needed to be able to do as a pro,” said the Mission Oack grad, during a press conference from Temecula.
“You know, I got cut. There was a mix-up with the referee. There were a lot of different things going on and I think that’s really been able to help me out and it will help me out in my future fights,” Torrez said.
Torrez said his debut fight was “awakening because at the Olympics there was no crowd, you know.”
“So, when I went there and I saw all the people there, it was a little bit of you got to shake those cobwebs off,” said the 23-year-old boxer.
Now in the professional world, there are a few things fans can expect from Torrez during his second professional fight.
“I’m here, I’m ready and we’re prepared for this fight,” said Torrez, adding that “it’s gonna be fireworks, it’s gonna be electrifying.”
Torrez said something that he did differently to prepare for this fight was working with his team back home to improve his nutrition.
“I think that’s the last step that we have to accomplish. And so, we’re, we’re, we’re all in now,” Torrez said.
