Scott Alcorn and the Fresno Fuego have two games left in the regular season and, as it turns out, in the coach’s career with the Premier Development League franchise.

Alcorn turned in his resignation last week, announcing he will step down at the end of the year.

The 49-year-old Alcorn said he wants to spend more time with his wife, Pam, and their four (soon to be five) grandchildren.

“I bleed Fuego and always want to put the team first but I think it’s time for a change at the top,” Alcorn said.

In nearly nine full seasons, Alcorn has a 76-36-24 record that includes three Southwest Division titles (2007, ’11, ’13) and two trips to the Western Conference championship — including a conference title and the club’s only berth in the PDL national semifinals in 2007.

It will be the first time in more than 30 years that Alcorn will step away from the sport.

Before joining the Fuego, he coached the California-North state team in the Olympic Development Program for eight years and had stints with Cal Odyssey, Fresno City College and Buchanan High.

It wasn’t always about winning at any of those levels for the Fresno native. More than anything, he wanted to help homegrown talent reach the professional ranks.

Outside of coaching, (Alcorn) is the guy who always wants to help the players. He’s a father figure to many of us. He invested a big part of his life into this club. He gave his time and won’t get it back. That’s huge.

More than 50 Fuego alumni have reached the pros, domestically or abroad, since 2003 and Alcorn has coached more than half.

“I’ve always put the players first and winning second,” Alcorn said. “I’m happy that we were able to move players on. That’s my biggest pleasure.”
