The northern section of the California Aqueduct remains slow overall as the flows have increased due to pumping out of the south Delta. Cope’s Tackle in Rod in Bakersfield reported good fishing in the southern aqueduct for both striped bass and catfish. Stripers have been on the small side, but there are plenty of them. The trick has been to move until a school of biting fish is located. Cut anchovies, lugworms, or chicken liver along with working the check gates with Flukes, swimbaits, top water walking baits, or small jerkbaits in Aurora Shad are working Catfishing is best with Triple S Dip Bait or cut baits, and good numbers and size of whiskerfish have been reported. There is a window for largemouth bass with topwater lures, but Senkos and drop shot Robos in Natural Shad and Ox Blood have been a better bet.
Aqueduct anglers are always advised to use caution as well as wearing a PFD as the water is swift, cold, and dangerous.

At Eastman, the Sierra Bass Club tournament on Saturday produced a winning weight over 15 pounds for a 3-pound plus average with the big fish of the event pushing 5 pounds. Big plastic worms, Keitech swimbaits, or large profile jigs continue to be effective on the rockpiles or the face of the dame as the fish are orienting toward structure. Minimal change at Hensley with catfish or carp taking center stage. Chicken liver or dip bait continue to be best for whiskerfish, particularly at night. Eastman dropped slightly to 534.03 feet in elevation and 47% of capacity with Hensley holding at 472.39 feet in elevation and 17% of capacity. At Eastman, no tournaments are scheduled through the remainder of the calendar year. At Hensley, the only scheduled tournament is in mid-November.

Lake Don Pedro

Don Pedro continues to be the place for quality rainbow trout in the Mother Lode. Monte Smith of Gold Country Sport Fishing found great action for his clients this week, keeping 7 fat, healthy rainbows while losing another three in the process. Finding the shad schools remains the key, and the rainbows are starting to come up a bit higher in the water column as the water continues to cool down. Trolling small shad-patterned spoons at depths from 60 to 110 feet is producing rainbows, but there are also plenty of the pesky small king salmon that can be released at the boat without netting. There are also spotted bass holding deep in the shad schools. For bass, Ryan Denner of Central Valley Bait and Tackle in Modesto reported a solid jig bite at depths from 20 to 40 feet. There are two bass tournaments scheduled through the end of October including the huge fundraising tournament on Oct. 26 – the ‘Live Like Mason’ Memorial for the family of Mason Ferrulli to be held at Fleming Meadows.
Launch updates are posted at www.donpedrolake.com. The lake continues to recede, and it is currently at 779.92 feet in elevation.

Ryan Denner reported a vastly improved bass bite with smaller Keitech swimbaits on an underspin along with topwater walking baits when the fish are busting shad on the surface. In addition, there is a decent jig bite. There are six club tournaments in November and four in December so interest should be heating up. The Merced River continues to drop, and it is 792 cfs at Merced Falls downstream of Lake McSwain. The lake is currently at 808.65 feet in elevation and 65% of capacity.

Bass 3 Trout 3 Crappie 2 Catfish 3 Bluegill 3
The lake dropped to 2557.52 feet in elevation and 27% with water releases at First Point dropping to 288 cfs. Cope’s reported bass fishing continues to be good from Boulder Gulch to the Cemetery with an early topwater bite with Whopper Ploppers or Spooks in bone colors. The North Fork seems to be best with jigs, creature baits, or deep crankbaits such as Rapala DT’s in 10 or 14 in both Demon, silver, or Pearl Grey Shiner. Crappie are hanging around the marinas eating super small mini jigs and small shiners. Whiskerfish have been showing around the lake with Triple S Dip Bait, shad, or mackerel. Cope’s reported the upper Kern was stocked this week in Section 4 from Riverside Park in Kernville to Powerhouse #3, and trout action is steady throughout the entire 20-mile stretch to the Johnsondale Bridge with trout jigs in various colors, pinched crawlers, or salmon eggs. Another trout plant is scheduled in Section 4 this week. In the lower Kern, trout have been showing in the canyon up to Keysville with trout jigs or spinners. Senkos, small crankbaits, or jigs are best for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Catfish can be caught with SSS dip bait, cutbait, and worms. Bluegill have been coming on live worms. The flows at Kernville are 338 CFS.

Lake Kaweah
Bass 2 Crappie 2 Trout 2 Catfish 2
The lake rose to 594.22 feet in elevation and 9% of capacity. Cope’s reported the lake is at its lowest levels in preparation for winter rains and runoff. Submerged rock piles, humps, or bluffs are holding spotted bass with finesse presentations on slow retrieve. Deep diving cranks baits are working for the bigger largemouth. Crappie are found 10 to 20 feet of water on main lake points with minijigs or small live minnows. Live nightcrawlers or cut baits on the bottom are best for catfish. The Kaweah River held at 69 cfs.
Lake Success
Bass 2 Crappie 2 Trout 2 Catfish 2
The lake dropped 4 feet to 607.88 feet in elevation and 22% of capacity. Cope’s reported a decent bass bite with finesse baits such as plastics in Aaron’s Magic, watermelon red flake, or green pumpkin on the drop- or shakey head along with spider jigs and Senkos. Crankbaits or topwater lures are working early or late. Catfish anglers did well in the North Fork using cut mackerel or Triple S Dip Bait, but there were few reports of crappie.
Lake McSwain
Trout 2
Since the tournament three weeks ago, fishing has slowed down with two or three rainbows from the banks being an exceptional score. The holdover rainbows have moved into the cooler waters of the river arm up to the Exchequer Dam. The best action remains in the early mornings or late evenings with garlic-scented Power Bait, Kastmasters, or nightcrawlers around the normal locations of the Brush Pile, Handicapped Docks, or the peninsula around the Marina remain the top options. The McSwain Marina is open on only weekends or holidays through October. The lake rose slightly to 90% of capacity.

Catching small bass remains the rule as landing anything of size is a challenge. Bill Kunz of St. Croix Rods finished second in Sunday’s Fresno Bass Club tournament, and he said, “There were around 12 limits out of 20 anglers with everyone else weighing in between 2 and 3 fish while some only had a single fish. For the most part, it’s tough, but if it cools off, the bite should improve for the Fourth Annual Tulare Police Athletic League Fundraiser Bass Tournament on Nov. 2.
There are lots of cookie-cutter fish weighing between 1 and 1.25 pounds.” The lake dropped 6½ feet to 501.61 feet in elevation and 42% of capacity. Sycamore Island is open once daily from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The flows in the San Joaquin River at Friant dropped slightly to 415cfs. Two club tournaments are scheduled in November with one in December.

New Melones Reservoir/Tulloch
Bass 2 Crappie 2 Catfish 3 Trout 2 Kokanee
Catfishing at night with liver or cut bait in the flats remains an excellent bet as the bass bite remains slow for the most part. Ryan Denner of Central Valley Bait and Tackle reported an overall tough bass bite with the best action with small Keitech swimbaits on an underspin or jigs. The trout bite remains slow, but there have been a few quality rainbows to 25 inches reported. Most trollers are heading south to Don Pedro for more consistent trout action, but similar to Pedro, the key at Melones is finding the shad schools and trolling a shad-patterned spoon through the bait fish as fish are spitting up shad. Club tournaments dominate the lake in the fall months with three scheduled in November and two in December. The lake is releasing water, and it dropped 1.5 feet to 1034.23 feet in elevation and 75% of capacity.

Brian Klassen of Reedley was out on Friday night with his brother Evan, Christian Garza, and Nate Lopez, and they anchored up in Flume Cove for 6 catfish to 3 pounds using nightcrawlers or anchovies. After spending a cold night on the boat, they trolled the main lake in the morning for 8 king salmon from 14 to 17 inches rolling shad or running Brad’s Cut Plugs stuffed with tuna scented with Pro Cure’s Bloody Tuna at depths from 60 to 80 feet. and caught 6 catfish to 3 lbs. we fished with night crawlers and anchovies. He said, “We didn’t catch any trout this time which was surprising, and the water temperature dropped from 74 to 69 degrees.” Interest in bass fishing will pick up within the month as there are upcoming tournaments in November and December. Jigs, crankbaits, plastics on the drop-shot, shad-patterned spoons, or Keitech swimbaits on an underspin at depths from 20 to 30 feet are the best bets. In the lower Kings, trout plants are scheduled the next two weeks. With the flows low at 257 cfs, the planters are holding in the pools, and limits have been taken with Power Bait, salmon eggs, nightcrawlers, spinners, or spoons in the slow water. The lake held at 824.20 feet in elevation and 40% of capacity. No club tournaments are scheduled in October, two scheduled in November, and four in December.

Mickey Clements of Coyote Bait and Tackle in Morgan Hill reported trollers have been scoring with Lucky Craft Pointers or Duo Realis Tide Minnows near the Trash Racks while there has also been a small window for topwater and jerkbaits when the stripers are boiling at the mouth of Portugeuse Cove or Goosehead Point.
Roger George of Roger George Guide Service said that the fish are boiling on top at times chasing very small shad.” The overall bite is sporadic with the active groups moving a lot - so finding and following the schools can be tough. Shore casting boat anglers are getting some good action on topwater and small ripbaits in the coves if they hit it right. I had an unexpected scouting trip pop up last week, and I hit the jackpot with a 41½ inch, 24-pound striper that was released quickly.
“I got it working the main lake at the 50-60’ depth on Shad colored lures. Water temps have fallen down to 69 degrees early, and the algae seems to be less thick. I’m doing a seminar:” Stripers: Tips, Tactics and Trophies “ at the Fresno Bee Fishing Expo on Nov. 9th in Fresno. “ George said.
There is an algae bloom in the O’Neill Forebay, but throwing jerkbaits or Rat-L-Traps around the rockwall is producing undersized to just legal striped bass over 18 inches. The main lake dropped slightly to 51% while the forebay rose slightly to 88%. To check the real time wind conditions on the lake - use windfinder.com/forecast/san_luis_reservoir.

A trout plant took place on Monday with some large rainbows up to 4½ pounds, and these fish will be available throughout the winter months. Shaver Lake guide emeritus, Dick Nichols of Dick’s Fishing Charters said, “Shaver continues to produce a limit or two of trout this past week, and with this week’s DF&W trout plant, it should elevate the creel count.
Shaver Lake Trophy Trout Projects trophy trout plant chairman Bob Bernier and his buddies, Tom Cabezot and Rick Jensen, all of Fresno took a break from deer hunting and went out in Bernier’s boat in search of rainbow trout. Fishing the Black Rock area with Dick’s Trout Busters tipped with crawler behind weighted Dick’s Mountain Flashers, they picked up a couple limits of trout before running out of nightcrawlers. Included in the catch were a 14-inch rainbow and a 16-inch brown.
This week’s action should be better near the dam due to the new plant at the Sierra ramp. The kokanee are mostly gone for the season, and the Shaver Marina is closed for the season.” Check ramp conditions at the Sierra Marina via their webcam at http://www.sierramarina.com/webcam-weather-page.html.
At Huntington, there hasn’t been much change as kokanee are well on their way in their attempt to spawn. Moving into the shallows are rainbow and brown trout to feed on the kokanee eggs. Inclement weather has been absent as we approach November, and cold and windy weather is necessary before the dedicated group of brown trout trollers make a showing. Both lakes held with Shaver at 54% of capacity and at Huntington 70% of capacity.

Rockfishing greater than 50 fathoms has been producing limits of rockfish for the few boats make the long run. The Ankeny Street returned with 11 limits of rockfish, 12 lingcod, and 125 sand dabs on Sunday while the Queen of Hearts out of Half Moon Bay Sport Fishing posted 10 limits and 3 lingcod. After Oct. 31, the rockfish season transitions once again to water less than 20 fathoms before finishing off the season during the month of December over 50 fathoms.

Chris’s Fishing and Whale Watching continues to find solid action for deep water rockfishing with 395 rockfish and 2 lingcod on Sunday’s trips with a combined 44 anglers on the Check Mate and the Caroline.
From the surf, Mickey Clements says the striped bass have migrated north with the best action from the surf from Half Moon Bay to Ocean Beach. There is a lot of grass in the Monterey area beaches, and anglers are avoiding the grass. Clements said, “Surf perch are spawning now, and the bite has slowed, but after this, the action should rebound.”
Allen Bushnell of Santa Cruz Kayak Fishing and Surf Casting Guide Service reported, “A beautiful west swell rolled in this week, to the delight of surfers up and down the coast. The swell served to further slow our halibut bite from the 30 to 70-foot depths, though a few flatties were reported caught near New Brighton Beach, Capitola and from some north coast spots. Halibut fishing has been good all season, starting early in March and continuing still. “ Bushnell said.

The weather offshore has been very good, and the party boats have been able to make it out to Rittenburg Bank for limits of huge rockfish along with limits to near limits of lingcod. Captain James Smith of the California Dawn 2 loaded up big time on Sunday with 25 limits of rockfish along with 25 limits of lingcod to 22 pounds to go with 290 sand dabs. Captain Chris Smith of the Pacific Dream went out in rougher weather on Saturday for 26 limits of rockfish to go with 15 lingcod. Captain Rick Powers of the New Sea Angler out of Bodega Bay also found tremendous rockfish and lingcod action at Rittenburg on Sunday with 16 limits of huge vermilion, canary, and Boccaccio rockfish along with 25 lingcod to 22 pounds.
Ron Koyasako of Nautilus Excursions continues to work over the striped bass in the bay, and limits of striped bass remain the rule for those drifting live bait, tossing swimbaits, or spooning. Most of the stripers are school-sized, but there have been some pushing 10 pounds.
J and P Bait in San Francisco remains open 6-9 a.m. Friday through Monday but is closed Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Captain Steve Mitchell of Hook’d Up Sport Fishing out of Berkeley also went out to Rittenburg Bank for 8 limits of rockfish this week, and he remains us that Dungeness crab season starts on Nov. 2nd. Mitchell, Koyasako, and several others will run the popular rockfish/crab combination trips starting on the opener. A 10-crab limit is generally guaranteed at the start of the season with the possibility of a 10-fish rockfish limit along with two lingcod. These are the best bargains of the year.

Sturgeon fishing has been outstanding for the few boats operating out of Pittsburg Marina, and while fishing for white sturgeon is now catch-and-release, anglers are finding ‘all you can want’ action. Kyle Wise of Head Hunter Guide Service was out on a crew trip, and they caught and released 7 sturgeon out of a dozen opportunities. Captain Joey Gamez of Golden State Sport Fishing has been running combination striped bass and sturgeon stripers, and after limiting out on the linesides, they anchor to catch and release sturgeon. The new regulations require that any sturgeon greater than 60 inches fork length may not be removed from the water and shall be released immediately. Previously this requirement was set at any sturgeon greater than 68 inches. Additionally, sturgeon of any size shall not be held out of the water suspended by the gills, gill plates, mouth or solely by the tail, and shall not be dragged across the ground, boat decks or piers. All anglers must have a valid 2024 Sturgeon Report Card.
As the water continues to cool, fresh striped bass are migrating into both sides of the California Delta. Jeff Soo Hoo of Soo Hoo Sport Fishing out of Lauritzen’s Yacht Harbor in Oakley continues to find limits drifting live mudsuckers or minnows on the San Joaquin side. As November approaches, the best time for bait fishing with fresh shad arrives, particularly as the water temperatures drop into the mid-50’s.
Ryan Denner of Central Valley Bait and Tackle in Modesto has found good action for striped bass in the central Delta tossing big topwater lures, swimbaits, crankbaits, or jerkbaits for linesides in the 18- to 22-inch range.
Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor, found great action for largemouth bass in the central Delta around King Island, Connection Slough, and Disappointment Slough with buzz baits or the Heli P prop bait before working the outside weed lines or the runways with moving weeds. He said, “The key is finding weeds with current moving over their tops and swaying. The ima Squarebill crankbait in chartreuse or red craw have been our go-to bait when working the weed lines.”
