With wildfires scorching the Sierra Nevada mountains resulting in hazardous air, the organizers of the annual Grizzly Century canceled the bicycle ride, ending the event’s consecutive 23-year run.

The Grizzly Century was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3.

The fires have made for unhealthy, smokey air in the area and would make the already grueling Grizzly Century even more strenuous for riders.

“In addition, many of the volunteers work for the Forest Service and have spent most of the summer fighting fires, and if more occur, they would be unavailable. To be safe and avoid last minute complications and expenses, the Grizzly Committee reluctantly made this decision,” the committee said in a news release.

All riders who have already paid their registration fees will be refunded.

Free fishing Saturday

Saturday, Sept. 5, is the second of two free fishing days this year organized by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Anybody can try their hand at angling without having to buy a sport fishing license.

All fishing regulations, for example bag limits, fishing hours and stream closures, remain in effect.

According to the CDFW, every angler is required to carry an appropriate report card if they are fishing for steelhead or sturgeon anywhere, or salmon in the Smith and Klamath-Trinity river systems.

Trail around Bush Tree reopened

The trail loop around the President George Bush Tree has reopened, the U.S. Forest Service announced Wednesday.

The trail is located east of Springville on the Western Divide Ranger District in the Giant Sequoia National Monument and Sequoia National Forest. It was closed five months ago after numerous dead and dying trees were found along the edge of the trail. Since April, firefighters have cleared the dangerous trees to get the trail ready for the Labor Day holiday.
