Prep football: No. 1 Clovis unloads on No. 8 Lemoore in victory
With the weapons Sean Kuenzinger has – and they were all over the field Friday at Lamonica Stadium – putting points on the scoreboard shouldn’t be a problem for Clovis.
With Kuenzinger passing for 323 yards and two touchdowns, The Bee’s top-ranked Central Section team downed No. 8 Lemoore 41-24 to hurdle their second big test in as many weeks to open the prep football season.
“We’re confident,” said Kuenzinger, who completed 19 of 31 passes, including 11 connections for 15 or more yards. “We put up 41 tonight and I think we can be putting up 50. We’re dangerous.”
Kuenzinger’s second touchdown pass, a 40-yard strike to Coltin Velasquez, gave the Cougars (2-0) a lead they would not relinquish. It came on an untimed play to end the first half following a Lemoore personal foul as time ran out.
The touchdown came two plays after the Tigers (1-1) had gone ahead 17-14 on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Logan Ahlin to Reggie Davis.
Clovis’ Jared Hill then made big plays on consecutive Lemoore possessions, first with a big hit on Ahlin that forced him out of the game, then a fumble recovery in the end zone following a bad snap as the Cougars went up 27-17.
Clovis iced it in the fourth quarter when Dyllon Hudec’s interception led to a 6-yard Josh Hokit touchdown run to help the Cougars pull away and avenge a 40-27 loss to Lemoore last season.
Clovis featured three receivers with at least 70 yards – Wills (124), Velasquez (91) and Clayton Alexander (70) – while Hokit rushed for 106 as part of a part of a 527-yard night for the offense.
“Our goal is to win a Valley championship,” said Clovis coach Rich Hammond, whose team opened with a 27-24 win over Paso Robles last week. “These guys were a very good opponent. It gives us a chance to see where we’re at.”
