  • Roosevelt beat Sunnyside 19-0; defense produced shutout and snapped streak.
  • McLane remains unbeaten at 6-0 after a 42-0 win, setting NYL title showdown.
  • Sophomore Vernon Lacy threw five touchdown passes as McLane offense dominated.

The Roosevelt High football team served up a doughnut against Sunnyside on Thursday night.

The Rough Riders defense made it hard on the Wildcats to get anything going at McLane Stadium.

The result: Rough Riders 19, Wildcats 0.

That brought out a big smile on Roosevelt head coach Ricky McCoy’s face when asked about the shutout win.

“I’m a defensive guy,” he said. “I love that. I always love zero points on the board.”

While McCoy’s defense came through, the offense did score points, but squandered opportunities to put more up. Maybe Roosevelt was looking ahead to next week’s NYL showdown against McLane that could decide the league champion.

Regardless, McCoy figures his team will figure it out.

“It’s hard not to,” McCoy said of having McLane on their minds. “They’re high schoolers. That’s their biggest rival on the calendar. We know we want that one. What we harped on all week and what we emphasize is first level first. We had to beat Sunnyside.”

It was the Rough Riders’ first win over the Wildcats since the shortened-season COVID year in 2020 played in the spring. The last fall season win was in 2018.

“This is a team that we haven’t beat in a long time,” McCoy said. “We had to snap that streak. Now that we did that, we can move on.”

McLane 42, Torres 0

The Highlanders didn’t forget about the Toros.

McLane scored early and often to remain undefeated at 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the NYL.

The sets up a showdown with Roosevelt that will place 7 p.m. Thursday at McLane Stadium.

Sophomore QB Vernon Lacy passed for five touchdowns.

Kingsburg 35, Washington Union 28

It was a see-saw battle between the Vikings and Panthers, but it was Cooper Holt returning a kickoff for 98 yards with 5 minutes remaining.
