The winner of The Fresno Bee Player of the Week for Week 1 is senior linebacker Connor Hammond of Fowler.

Hammond was voted the Player of the Week after he made seven tackles and 2.5 sacks in the Redcats’ 19-0 victory over Hanford West.

“This was my first varsity game starting,” Hammond said. “Just to be able to get nominated by my coaches is special and I want to thank my coaches for that.”

Fans gave him the nod, and it showed in the poll when he finished with 25,740 votes (58%).

Hammond finished ahead of Madera’s Anthony Estrada, who had 17,649 votes (40%). Finishing third was CJ Barker of Roosevelt, who had 601 votes.

“Just the recognition that I got felt really nice,” Hammond said. “The whole school rallied. It was just a cool experience.”
