Clovis East dominates in ‘Battle for the Boot’ with 52-33 victory over Clovis High

Clovis East is making it look easy in the Tri-River Athletic Conference.

Clovis High found that out in a hurry when falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter as The Bee’s top-ranked Timberwolves overwhelmed No. 5 Cougars 52-33 in the ‘Battle for the Boot’ at Lamonica Stadium on Friday night.

“It took us a long time to get the boot and then we wanted to win it again,” Clovis East coach Brandon Nagle said.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my coaches and players.”

The Timberwolves controlled the game by scoring on offense, defense and special teams.

There was a 74-yard kickoff return by Harold Duvall. And also a Pick-6 by Oshea Webb that went for 75 yards.

All that meant was a dominating performance by Clovis East.

“We could get better on defense, but we’re going to fix those things,” Nagle said. “But really, these coaches and players work so hard. It’s not easy to win a game in the TRAC especially against (Clovis). We keep everything (in front of us) and focus one week at a time. We just focus on us and that’s what I feel like this makes this team special.”

Clovis East has been on a roll from the beginning of the season where they traveled to Salt Lake City and defeated West 24-21, who is tied for first in their league.

Another signature victory for the Timberwolves came against Grant-Sacramento on Sept. 13.

Clovis East next plays Buchanan before a possible showdown for the TRAC title against Clovis North on Nov. 1.

For now, Duvall said he’s going to remember the win and his kickoff return for a touchdown.

“It was kind of crazy,” he said. “Caught it at the 5-yard line, my line set up, kicked everyone out and it just opened up and I took off. I knew as soon as I hit the hole, no one was going to catch me. It feels good, but we’re not satisfied. We’re still hungry.”
