The Sunnyside High football team made quick work of Roosevelt on Friday night, winning 44-22.

It was the first game for the Wildcats since this week they had to forfeit two games before it was announced later that four games had to be forfeited because of the use of an ineligible player.

It was reported the player played in a JV game before playing in a varsity game which is against CIF rules.

Sunnyside and Fresno Unified self-reported the infraction.

Initially, the Wildcats forfeited games against Madera South and Reedley.

Now Sunnyside has forfeits against Ridgeview and McLane.

Sunnyside coach Thomas Wilson said it was an “oversight” while FUSD said in a statement:

“We sincerely apologize to our players, our previous opponents impacted, families, and the community for an error causing forfeiture and warranting corrective action. An athlete’s number change was not properly communicated, leading to their participation in both JV and varsity games, which is a violation of CIF rules. We have self-reported this violation to the CIF Central Section Commissioner and as a result, Sunnyside will forfeit a total of four games, updating their record to 1 win and 4 losses. Please know we have taken steps to hold ourselves accountable and to ensure this does not happen again.”

It’s unknown if Wilson will face any suspension but FUSD said “the investigation is still underway and do not have additional information to share. Any corrective action taken as a result of this investigation would be 100% confidential as it is a personnel matter.”

Sunnyside improved to 2-4 and 1-2 in the NYL.

The forfeits has caused the NYL standings to look different with Hoover leading the way at 3-0 followed by McLane at 2-0.
