How Sunnyside overcame sluggish game against McLane in North Yosemite League showdown
Points usually come in bunches for the Sunnyside High football team.
That wasn’t the case Thursday against McLane — in a North Yosemite League showdown — at McLane Stadium.
That’s fine by Wildcats coach Thomas Wilson after The Bee’s 13th ranked team defeated McLane 13-6 behind the game-winning touchdown by Romulan Phetvixay, who scored from 1-yard.
“We kind of established what we were doing offensively,” he said. “We just couldn’t get a rhythm all night long. We just kept hurting ourselves.
Sunnyside sealed the win on an interception by Bob Davis.
“McLane did a great job,” Wilson said. “They fought hard and did everything that they were supposed to do. Tonight was one of the things that we found a way. They didn’t do anything wrong. We just found a way to be successful.”
Sunnyside hopes to finish the NYL undefeated.
Standing in the way are the other five NYL teams standing in the way, including Roosevelt, which rolled past Sanger West 55-0.
Going into the game Thursday, Sunnyside had scored 30+ points and outscored its opponents 135-27.
“It’s good for us to struggle every once in a while,” Wilson said. “What the offensive line established is that they can be tough and we can be physical and be a downhill football team when we need to.”
