High school football: Buchanan dominates, plus Hanford, Fowler, Reedley impressive
The Buchanan High football team showed how tough they can be this season.
A down year for The Bee’s 25th-ranked Bears? Not the way they played in the season opener Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Buchanan jumped out early and often on St. Pius X-St. Matthias in a 38-0 victory.
Carvell Wafer made things happen for the Bears.
He scored Buchanan’s first touchdown, scoring on a 30-yard run in the first quarter.
Wafter later added a touchdown with a 30-yard reception from Logan Sanchez in the third quarter.
The highlight of the game came in the second quarter when Landon Burger scored on a 102-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Wyatt Aviles and Gannon Sever each had a touchdown run for the Bears.
Hanford holds off Kennedy
It didn’t take until the second half for Hanford to get going.
And when they did, the Bullpups didn’t look back.
No. 7 Hanford outscored No. 23 Kennedy 23-7 in the second half for a 45-29 victory.
Bullpups senior quarterback Daniel Gomez passed for two touchdowns and finished the game with 157 yards. He also did it on the ground when he had 10 carries for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Hanford senior running back Kourdey Glass had three receptions for 97 yards. He finished with a rushing and a receiving touchdown.
Albert Richardson had a rushing touchdown while Taveon Patterson had a receiving and a kickoff return for a touchdown.
Reedley rolls Fresno
Will Bacon had his way against Fresno.
He passed for two touchdowns and ran for two and converted a two-point conversion in the Pirates’ 27-7 victory over the Warriors at McLane Stadium.
Bacon finished the game with 118 passing yards and rushed for 74 yards.
Adrian Morales had 102 rushing yards.
Two freshmen scored for the Pirates. They are Carson Harman (55-yard reception) and EJ Andres (34-yard reception).
The Reedley defense held down the Fresno offense, not allowing that unit to score.
Fowler looks sharp in win
Jerod Smith led the way for Fowler.
He had a passing touchdown and ran it for a score to lead the Redcats past the Huskies.
Fowler is looking to rebound after going 6-7 last season.
