Clovis East senior Tommy Nix felt an instant connection with Fresno State because of the familiar faces on the team.

Namely Bulldogs quarterback Jayden Mandal and running back Brandon Ramirez.

Nix will join them after verbally committing to Fresno State on Thursday.

“The culture there is really great,” he said. “It’s something that I’m comfortable with.”

Nix, listed at 6-foot-2 and 198 pounds, played wide receiver and defensive back for the Timberwolves last season.

As a receiver, he finished with 67 receptions for 1,313 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also made 72 tackles, eight tackles for a loss and five interceptions and three pass deflections.

When Nix joins Fresno State, he said he’ll be playing defensive back.

During the course of the recruitment, Nix said he spoke to associate head coach John Baxter and defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle.

Nix said he had a preferred walk-on offer at UCLA but wanted to see what would happen to Chip Kelly, who reportedly will be the Ohio State offensive coordinator.

Fresno State made the offer to Nix in November.

“Really just they came to me and they said they liked my film,” he said. “My game style and everything. I’m a hard worker, strong work ethic and willing to do anything to help my team win.”

Nix figures that will happen at Fresno State and went further to say competing for national championships is the ultimate goal.

He said playing in the Tri-River Athletic Conference got him ready for the next level.

“Really just going against a lot of competition,” Nix said. “Play against the best players in the area. Just put me in the best position to make plays and everything else showed.”
