Hanford High football coach Josh Young steps down. His record will be hard to beat
Josh Young has stepped down after 13 seasons as the Hanford High football head coach that included a state championship.
He announced his decision on Wednesday. He’ll remain as a teacher at the school.
“It was going to happen at some point,” Young said. “It’s never an easy thing to do and it was the right time to do it. I just felt it was time that I needed to move on and let somebody else take over.
“There were factors. Health being one of the things and family being another that attributed to the decision, but none of them were a sole reason as to why. It was a culmination to a lot of things.”
Young, 44, accumulated a 98-53 record that includes three West Yosemite League championships (2011, 2018 and 2019), according to Central Section historian Bob Barnett. His teams won section championships in 2014 and 2015.
The pinnacle moment for the Bullpups was in 2015, capturing a CIF Division 4-AA state championship with a 33-21 victory over Bonita Vista-Chula Vista.
Hanford also won three section team academic championships under Young.
He said he is “appreciative of all of the support and community and school has given” and grateful to the players and supportive coaching staff.
“We’ve had a lot of great wins and a lot of great seasons,” he said. ‘Just the ability to be able to coach a group of men that come together and worked towards a common goal. I was able to have that feeling of accomplishment of fulfilling some of those goals several times.”
