Prep basketball: Central, Roosevelt boys fall in SoCal Regional

Central High took an early lead but it didn’t hold up Wednesday night, as the Grizzlies fell to Alemany-Mission Hills 81-56 in the opening round of the Southern California Division I boys basketball regional.

Jaylon Johnson and Cashemin Williams each had 16 points to lead 11th-seeded Central, which finishes 22-7.

Sixth-seed Alemany trailed 19-12 in the first quarter but rolled from there. The host Warriors (24-8) bolted to a 16-0 run to start the second quarter and never looked back in advancing to face third-seeded Narbonne-Harbor City, a 56-54 winner over No. 14 Compton, in Saturday’s second round.

Among other highlights:

▪ Fresno State-bound Bryson Williams led Roosevelt with a triple-double in his final game, scoring 30 points to go with 18 rebounds and 12 blocks, as the No. 10 Rough Riders lost to No. 7 Calabasas 55-52 in a D-III game.

▪ Hanford’s No. 14-seeded girls had a four-point halftime lead at No. 3 Alemany, but the Warriors rallied 68-41.
