The Clovis High girls basketball team is closing in on a long-awaited milestone: an outright Tri-River Athletic Conference championship.
The Cougars took a significant step toward that goal Friday night with a 54-44 victory over Clovis West.
“They just kept working on what we talked about,” Clovis coach Cooper Steele said. “Tonight was all about defense. I thought we were phenomenal on defense. We made them earf a lot of their buckets, and of course they did because they’re Clovis West, and they have great players, but I didn’t see a lot of easy ones. We really focused in on staying in front, just guarding them, blocking out, and I think we did a good job.”
Clovis can secure the outright title Tuesday night when it hosts Central East. The Bengals will provide a stiff test after splitting their season series with Clovis West.
Clovis previously defeated Central East 51-47 on the road.
Clovis West shared the TRAC title twice with Buchanan (2011-2012) and Clovis (2022-2023).
It will be another tough challenge for Steele’s squad, which is aiming to end Clovis West’s run of 20 consecutive TRAC titles.
“I don’t have to explain that to them,” Steele said. “They’re workers, man. They work, they understand what’s at task, and I won’t have to say much.”
Clovis was led by Sadie Sin, who scored a game-high 28 points. She helped maintain the Cougars’ composure throughout the game, particularly after Clovis built a commanding 23-6 lead in the second quarter.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 19-9 overall and 8-1 in TRAC play.
