Clovis West girls basketball team ends season with pride despite loss to Archbishop Mitty
No matter how the season ended for the Clovis West High girls basketball team, head coach Craig Campbell will always be proud of his players.
From the opening tip against Sierra Pacific to the NorCal Open Division I final against nemesis Archbishop Mitty, Campbell said he knew just how special the group was, seeing each of them grow up to be the players they are.
Campbell got a lot out of his team this season in a big way, even after the departure of Athena Tomlinson, who graduated and is hooping at Boston College.
Clovis West put on a long win streak and hoped to set themselves up with homecourt advantage in the CIF state playoffs. That didn’t happen. Instead, Clovis West headed back to San Jose to face Archbishop Mitty for a fourth straight time to decide who would go to the state title game.
And unlike in past meetings where the Golden Eagles were routed each time, Clovis West hung around Tuesday night and even took a lead in the fourth quarter. But the lead didn’t last long as Mitty hit back-to-back 3-pointers during an 8-0 run to pull out a 64-60 victory.
Campbell said he was proud of his players.
“They’re remarkable,” he said. “All year people kept trying to discredit all the amazing things they accomplished. And they just kept breaking barriers. Clovis West is a national name — and this team maintained that legacy.”
The 33-1 Golden Eagles ended up winning a 19th consecutive Tri-River Athletic Conference title and a 13th consecutive section championships, according to section historian Bob Barnett.
