‘Lucky’ Clovis West pulls out triple overtime win over Clovis North in boys basketball

Clovis West High boys basketball coach Vance Walberg called it “lucky” that his Golden Eagles came out with a 102-94 win over Clovis North in triple overtime in the championship game of the Nike Invitational.

The Broncos (6-1) were in position to put the game away in second overtime, but a missed layup sent the game to a third overtime and the Golden Eagles (10-0) took over to pull out the win Saturday in front of a packed gym at Clovis West.

“We were lucky,” Walberg said. “They ran a great play and we didn’t defend it very well and missed the layup to win the game. That’s luck.”

Clovis West trailed by as many as 16 points in the third quarter and rallied.

Isaac Martinez led the way for the Golden Eagles by finishing with a team-high 31 points and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

He also made a layup with 11.4 seconds remaining in the second overtime to tie the game at 88.

“They put us in a hole pretty fast early in that third quarter,” Walberg said. “I just think that playing a big game like this, at this time, is always good for the kids to be in this kind of a pressure situation.”
