Prep soccer: Buchanan boys, Clovis East girls top-ranked as playoffs loom

Michael Arrington, right, and the Central High boys soccer team can clinch the Tri-River Athletic Conference title with a win Tuesday against Clovis East. Buchanan High School’s nationally ranked boys soccer team might not win the Tri-River Athletic Conference title, but a win Tuesday against Clovis North likely will clinch the top seed for the Central Section Division I playoffs.

The Fresno Bee’s top-ranked Bears, 5-1-3 in league play, trail No. 3 Central (6-2-1) by one point under the TRAC’s standings system, which awards three points for a win and one for a tie.

But Buchanan, which is ranked No. 16 nationally by topdrawsoccer.com, has beaten Central in two of three head-to-head meetings this season and tied the other.

That probably will be the deciding factor between the two-time defending D-I champion Bears and Grizzlies for the No. 1 seed when pairings for the section’s six boys and girls playoff divisions are announced Saturday.

Bullard and Liberty should also be in the discussion for the top seed, but Central’s 3-1 win over Liberty on Dec. 30 plays against the Southwest Yosemite League-leading Patriots.

Central closes the regular season by hosting Clovis East on Tuesday.

Other interesting races for the top seed are shaping up in D-II (where South, Edison and Golden West appear to have a shot), D-III (Roosevelt, Independence and Ridgeview appear to be the top contenders) and D-VI (Mendota and Avenal are the class of the field and have split two meetings).

On the girls side, No. 1 Clovis East, which has clinched the TRAC title, appears favored to land the top seed in Division I.

Madera South and Redwood look to be the class of the field in D-II, while Hoover, Liberty-Madera Ranchos, Independence and East Bakersfield have strong résumés for the top seed in D-III.
