Prep soccer: Buchanan back atop boys rankings
Buchanan High’s boys soccer team bounced back from a rough start to Tri-River Athletic Conference play with authority last week.
The Bears beat Clovis and Clovis North, ranked at the time Nos. 2 and 12, by a combined score of 5-0 after opening the TRAC with 1-1 ties against Central and Clovis East, and suffering their only loss of the season 3-0 against Clovis West.
Buchanan returns to the No. 1 spot in The Bee’s Central Section rankings after being surpassed by Edison and Clovis last week. In addition to Clovis’ 2-0 loss to the Bears, Edison was upset by unranked Madera South 1-0 in the County/Metro Athletic Conference.
The two-time defending Central Section Division I champion Bears continue to be ranked nationally by topdrawersoccer.com, dropping from No. 15 to No. 16 in its latest poll.
Buchanan hosts No. 3 Central at 3 p.m. Tuesday and is pointing toward a rematch with No. 12 Clovis West on Feb. 2.
On the girls side, Clovis East remains top-ranked after defeating No. 5 Clovis West 3-2 in double overtime and Central 3-0. The Timberwolves lead the TRAC at 5-0 and are the section’s only unbeaten team at 13-0-2.
Clovis East plays at No. 3 Clovis at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
