Prep notebook: Clovis crowns 6 champs at Shootout
Behind six individual champions, Clovis High rolled to the Clovis West Shootout wrestling tournament title.
The five-time defending CIF State champion Cougars compiled 249 points. Poway of the San Diego Section was second with 185, followed by Servite-Anaheim at 155 during an event that drew 19 teams from around the state.
Justin Mejia, a state champ at 106 and 113 pounds the past two seasons, continued to make a smooth transition up in weight as he captured the 126-pound title with a pin in 1:44 over Poway’s Scott Kiyono. Mejia won the 126-pound title at the Newbury Park Invitational on Dec. 5 as well.
Clovis, which sent a split varsity squad to the Holister Duals, also received titles from Dylan Martinez (152), Brandon Martino (160), Josh Hokit (195), AJ Nevills (220) and Seth Nevills (285). Seth Nevills is the reigning state 220-pound champion, while Hokit (170) and AJ Nevills (182) were runner-ups last season.
Clovis North placed eighth with a split-squad team, led by second-place individual finishes from Chris Deloza (133) and Nathaniel Holloway (285), while tournament host Clovis West was 12th, led by a third-place finished by Ryan Reyes (182).
The other big local tournament took place at Madera South, where Dinuba edged Clovis North on the total pins tiebreaker for the Chukchansi Invitational title.
The Emperors and Broncos each finished with 164 points. Madera South was third with 161 and Buchanan was fourth at 139.
Dinuba received title-runs from Isaiah Perez (120) and Jacob Wright (140). Clovis North was led by Eric Rivera, who won at 113.
Other local champions included Dos Palos’ Adrian Marufo (126), Lemoore’s Gary Joint (132), Madera South’s Auggie Garcia (145), Buchanan’s Tristan Zamilpa (152) and Anthony Montalvo (182) and Bullard’s Bevan Brandt (220).
Girls soccer – Gaining momentum for what promises to be a challenging Tri-River Athletic Conference schedule, Central captured the 29th annual Peggy Renberg Holiday Classic title on Saturday.
The Grizzlies, ranked third in the Central Section by The Bee, edged No. 13 and event host Hoover 1-0 to win the 12-team tournament title for the third straight year.
Only Bakersfield and Buchanan (five each) have more Renberg titles than Central (7-1-2), which received a goal from Jenica Villalvazo off an assist from Ashtyn Bracamonte in the final.
The Grizzlies also beat Mt. Whitney 1-0, Reedley 1-0 and tied No. 12 Madera 0-0 in pool play.
Central competes in the Garces Holiday Tournament this weekend and has a nonleague home match against No. 7 Bullard on Dec. 30 before opening TRAC play on Jan. 13 against Clovis West.
All six TRAC schools are ranked among the section’s Top 10, led by No. 2 Clovis East. Clovis North is No. 4, Buchanan is No. 6, Clovis is No. 8 and Clovis West No. 9.
