Coaches’ rankings, in an unprecedented move in Central Section football, will determine the top nine seeds in each of six divisions Saturday.

“Coaches wanted their say where teams went,” section associate commissioner Jeff Cardoza said.

Coaches rankings were used as a starting point last year, he said. They’ll be used as starting and ending points now.

But there’s a caveat – and it could include a punishment.

“In the old way,” Cardoza said, “some coaches submitted rankings and some did not. This year, it’s mandatory, and for those who don’t (submit) stand a chance of not getting a 1-8 seed.”

The deadline for coaches to submit their rankings to section commissioner Jim Crichlow’s five-man committee – including Cardoza and three area commissioners – has been moved back to Saturday by 10 a.m.

Coaches’ rankings for Central Section football seedings were used as a starting point last year. They’ll be used as starting and ending points now.

“Previously, Cardoza said, “they were turned in before Friday night’s games, so if there were upsets, they were not valid.”

The regular season will end Friday. Playoffs will begin next week. Each of the section’s six champions will advance to state regional bowls as part of the state’s expanded bowl format.

Cardoza said the seeding process should begin at 1 p.m. and finish about 3:30 or 4 p.m. A bracket release show has been eliminated.

Cardoza said he doesn’t expect more than 11 teams in each of the divisions. The committee will determine seeds Nos. 10 and 11 for those divisions with 10 or more.

Also, Cardoza said, should the coaches’ rankings fail to determine “clear-cut” seeds in any division, the committee will implement a new three-point criteria to make choices itself. The criteria are head-to-head competition, record vs. common opponent and divisional rankings by MaxPreps.com and Calpreps.com, which are identical.

Section volleyball and water polo seedings will be determined Friday.
