Prep football: No. 4 Bullard powers past No. 3 Clovis West

Bullard High football coach Don Arax finally got the performance he had been seeking from his revamped offense.

The Bee’s Central Section No. 4-ranked Knights rolled up 533 yards during a 42-23 victory over No. 3 Clovis West on Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

“We’ve been looking for that kind of offensive explosion,” Arax said. “We’ve shown hints of it, but this was our breakout.”

In switching from a spread to a West Coast wing-T and with Arax assuming play-calling duties, Bullard has put up 27.7 points a game while rushing for an average of 272 yards and passing for 109.

The Knights (4-1) went for 365 rushing, led by Charles Williams’ 249, and 169 passing from Jack Taylor while handing the Golden Eagles (2-1) their first loss.

Bullard took control in the second half, scoring on four of its six possessions, including touchdown runs of 6 and 1 yards by Williams and a reception of 30 yards and a run of 30 yards by Sidney Washington.

The Knights’ scoring drives went for 10, eight, seven and six plays.

“That had been my concern – we hadn’t had those consistent drives,” Arax said. “We have a new offense and the kids are still learning it.”

Bullard went ahead 14-6 in the first half, getting a 62-yard touchdown run from Markelle Raymond and a 1-yarder from Williams, who would carry the ball 37 times while averaging 6.7 yards a rush.
