  • Central Valley Christian scored six runs in the third inning to defeat Garza.
  • Minarets rallied to a 10-9 Division V victory, claiming its second section title.

After upsetting top-seeded Kingsburg in the Central Section Division III playoffs, ninth-seeded Central Valley Christian proved it was a championship contender.

It didn’t matter who stood in the Cavaliers’ way after that opening-round upset.

No. 4 Edison and, most recently, No. 7 Garza discovered just how tough CVC could be.

The Cavaliers scored six runs in the third inning to break open the game and pull away for a victory over the Guardians on Friday at Valley Strong Ballpark in Visalia.

The championship was a historic one for Central Valley Christian.

According to Central Section historian Bob Barnett, it marked the first section baseball title in school history.

Division V

No. 2 Minarets had to rally against top-seeded Shafter, but the Mustangs came away with a 10-9 victory to claim the Division V championship.

Minarets trailed 5-3 in the third inning before battling back to tie the game at 5-5. The Mustangs then scored two runs in the fifth inning and added three more in the sixth to build a cushion.

Shafter made things interesting by scoring two runs in the seventh inning, but Minarets held on to secure the win.

Beckham Mathewson drove in three runs for the Mustangs, while Jamie Spurgeon finished with a double, a triple and two RBI.

Spurgeon also earned the win on the mound, striking out 10 over 4 2/3 innings. Torin Wolf pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and recorded two strikeouts.

The title was the second section championship in school history for Minarets and its first since 2014.
