  • Clovis (No. 1) and Central East (No. 6) meet Tuesday in regional final.
  • Regional winner advances to state championship at Golden 1 Center next weekend.

As expected, the CIF Northern California regional semifinal Division II boys basketball game between top-seed San Joaquin Memorial and No. 13 Clovis West was a close one.

In front of a packed SJM gym, the Panthers held on for a 60-50 victory to advance to Tuesday’s regional championship against No. 6 Oakland Tech.

The Panthers sealed the game for good when Ty Schalk drilled a 3-pointer with 1 minute left, giving Memorial a 58-50 lead.

The winner of Tuesday’s game will advance to the state championship, which takes place at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento next weekend.

While SJM and Clovis West featured two Fresno-area teams, the same will be true next week when the Clovis girls face Central East.

Both teams won their regional semifinal game to advance to the next round.

Top-seeded Clovis defeated No. 5 Priory 52-40, while the sixth-seeded Bengals rolled to a 76-63 win over No. 7 Saint Francis. The Bengals’ game was played at Garza High because the Central East campus had no power.

It certainly didn’t matter to Central East where they played the game. Now, they will face the Cougars for a fourth time this season.

Clovis beat the Bengals all three times.

Meanwhile, No. 2 Clovis West girls rallied to prolong its season with a 71-66 victory over St. Mary’s.

It wasn’t easy for the Golden Eagles, who trailed 42-28 at halftime.

Ramie Chatman carried the team, finishing with a game-high 40 points, including 29 points in the second half.

Also advancing to the regional championship is Sierra Pacific girls, Tulare Union boys and Coalinga boys.
