Prep fall sports: Clovis, Clovis West still alive in NorCal volleyball playoffs
Buchanan’s season came to an end Saturday after a losing in five sets to No. 7 James Logan in the girls volleyball CIF Northern California Division I playoffs.
The Central Section Division I champion Bears trailed 2-0 and couldn’t recover.
No. 4 Clovis, meanwhile, lost to top-seeded Woodcreek in four sets.
In Division II, No. 4 Clovis West’s season is still alive after pulling off a five-set win over top-seed Palo Alto.
The Golden Eagles will play in the regional final against No. 2 St. Francis.
Like Clovis West, No. 3 Immanuel plays for the Division IV regional final.
The Eagles swept No. 2 Bear River to move on to play No. 1 Ripon Christian.
The regional championships will be played on Tuesday.
Boys water polo section championships
Top-seed Buchanan defeated No. 2 Clovis 9-8 for the Central Section Division I championship.
The win gives the Bears their third straight section title.
In Division II, No. 3 Clovis East defeated No. 1 Garces 9-8.
Alex Escatell scored the game winner for the Timberwolves.
In Division III, No. 2 Tulare Western defeated No. 4 Bakersfield 15-10.
The champions learned on Sunday where they will be playing in the regionals.
No. 3 Clovis hosts No. 6 Clovis North at 5 p.m. Tuesday in NorCal Division II. No. 2 Buchanan will host No. 7 Rocklin. No. 5 Clovis West faces No. 4 Saint Francis.
No. 8 Tulare Western visits top-seed Archbishop Mitty in Division III. No. 2 Clovis East hosts No. 7 Roseville.
Girls water polo section championships
No. 1 Arroyo Grande rolled to a 13-3 victory over No. 3 Garces in Division I.
In Division II, No. 1 Garces routed No. 6 Bullard 19-6.
No. 1 Sierra Pacific defeated No. 2 Centennial 13-8.
In the NorCal regionals, No. 4 Clovis will host No. 5 Archbishop Mitty on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Division II. No. 7 Buchanan will visit No. 2 Davis.
In Division III, No. 7 Sierra Pacific visits No. 2 Garces.
Asterisk Talley to compete at state golf championship
Chowchilla’s Asterisk Talley will compete at the state championships at Pebble Beach on Wednesday.
Talley won the SoCal regionals after she shot a 9-under 65 at Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills. She was two shots better than the second-place finisher.
Talley won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball and was runner-up at the U.S. Girls Junior and U.S. Women’s Amateur.
Girls tennis: SJM, Sanger West win section titles
San Joaquin Memorial were the top-seed in Division II and didn’t have trouble against No. 3 St. Joseph.
The Panthers went on to win the match 6-3 to secure the section title.
Sanger West, meanwhile, started up four years ago and have won the Division IV title with a 5-2 victory.
“I wanted to be a part of opening a new school and getting the opportunity to build our tennis program from the ground up,” Hornets coach Megan Lee said.
“What has been most rewarding for me is to see how far our program has come within these last four years. We have put a lot of hard work in over the years and it was great to see all of that hard work finally pay off.”
Sanger West No. 4 player Miranda Leon clinched the championship point with a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
In Division I, No. 2 Clovis North fell to No. 1 Stockdale 5-2.
The individual championships will be played this week.
Cross country meet at Woodward Park
The Central Section meet will take place Thursday at Woodward Park.
The start time is as follows: 11 a.m. D-II boys; 11:30 a.m. D-III boys; noon D-II girls; 12:30 p.m. D-III girls; 1 p.m. D-IV boys; 1:30 p.m. D-V girls; 2 p.m. D-I boys; 2:30 p.m. D-IV girls; 3 p.m. D-V boys; 3:30 p.m. D-I girls.
