Here’s who made it to CA track championships finals in Clovis, including Fresno area
Qualifying heats for the California Interscholastic Federation state track and field championships started Friday under the scrutiny of one athlete.
The start of the two-day day meet at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis included the participation of a transgender competitor, whom The Bee is not identifying. She qualified for Saturday’s finals in three events: the high jump, long jump and triple jump.
Outside the stadium, supporters of mostly girls competition and also trans inclusion gathered before Friday’s qualifying events started. Eventually during the hot afternoon there was an incident that, police said, involved pepper spray and an arrest.
Inside the stadium, the athlete received cheers and engaged in banter with competitors.
Clovis had a high of 98 degrees Friday and it’s expected to hit 102 Saturday.
The field events finals begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by track events at 5:45 p.m.
Podium chances for Fresno competitors
McKay Madsen of Clovis North took another step in defending his dual state titles when he qualified in the discus and shot put.
He is not the only Fresno-area athlete primed to challenge for a state title Saturday evening.
Hudson Hergenrader of Buchanan had a third-best qualifying time in the 110 high hurdles, winning his heat in 13.92.
Hergenrader figures to be standing somewhere on the podium, but he also can challenge for a state title after consistent times all season. He will also challenge for a medal, awarded to the top six finishers at the state meet, in the 300 intermediate hurdles.
But back to Madsen. He may be untouchable — he usually distances himself from others in the field of throwers.
He did just that Friday when he took first in the prelims in the shot put with a throw of 67 5 3/4 —separating himself significantly from second-place qualifier Luke Lewis of Junipero Serra at 59 1 3/4.
It was the same in the discus: Madsen at 206-11 followed by Benjamin Ligenfelter of Yucaipa at 188-4.
