High school baseball: Surprises from the Fresno Easter Classic, plus awards handed out
The annual Fresno Easter Classic came to a close Wednesday with the high school baseball championship between Clovis East and Davis.
The Blue Devils won the championship, 8-2, at Stan Bledsoe Field at Clovis West.
The three-day tournament featured some surprises including Sierra Pacific defeating Clovis North 4-3 on the first day.
Another surprise came when Garza outlasted Clovis West 11-10 on the final day of the annual classic.
Trey Morris of Washington Union, meanwhile, keeps attracting Major League Baseball scouts when he steps on the mound.
He didn’t disappoint Wednesday when he finished with 16 strikeouts in an 8-0 victory over Crater-Oregon. Morris faced 24 batters and threw 106 pitches. He was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Pitcher.
Also named Most Outstanding Pitcher is Jamie Spurgeon of Clovis East. He pitched 6.2 innings and allowed one walk and struck out five in a 2-0 win over Elk Grove.

Buchanan’s Tyler O’Toole was named Most Valuable Player.
He finished going 6 for 15 with a double, five runs and seven RBI.
