Six Central Section boys and girls water polo teams were crowned champions this past weekend.

The championships were played at Sierra Pacific in Hanford.

Boys: Buchanan (D-I), Garces (D-II) and Cabrillo (D-III) were named champions.

Girls: Arroyo Grande (D-I), Morro Bay (D-II) and Frontier (D-III).

Buchanan boys have dominated D-I, winning back-to-back titles but also won four straight section titles before the pandemic halted sports in 2020.

All six teams found out where they will play in the state playoffs.

On the girls side, No. 4 Clovis East will host No. 5 San Ramon Valley-Danville in Division II. Also in D-II, No. 6 Clovis visits No. 3 Leland-San Jose and No.7 Buchanan travels to No. 2 Stevenson-Pebble Beach.

In boys, Buchanan’s reward for winning the section title is a match against No. 1 De La Salle-Concord in Division I.

In D-II, No. 5 Clovis visits No. 4 Davis Sr.-Davis and No. 3 Clovis West will host No. 6 Rocklin.

Volleyball: Three Fresno-area teams remain alive

Three high school volleyball teams remain alive in the CIF state playoffs after advancing this past weekend.

Buchanan was seeded No. 3 in the NorCal and picked up wins over No. 14 Harbor and No. 11 Cardinal Newman in sweeps.

Sammie Aaron finished the match with 14 kills and Peyton Truong added 11 kills.

The Bears will visit No. 1 San Ramon Valley on Tuesday.

In SoCal, CVC was seeded No. 1 and got by No. 8 Point Loma and No. 4 El Dorado in four sets.

The Cavaliers next face No. 2 Palisades for the SoCal championship.

Immanuel, too, advanced in NorCal D-III picking up sweeps over No. 14 Oakland Tech and No. 11 Encinal.

The Eagles host No. 4 Bradshaw Christian for the title game.

The state championships will take place at Santiago Canyon College in Orange on Saturday.
