It was a magical season for the Clovis North high school football team in 2023.

The Broncos rolled through the season, including in the Tri-River Athletic Conference and were the top-seed in the Central Division I playoffs.

All that meant was The Bee’s preseason No. 1 Clovis North winning the D-I championship defeating Central 24-14 winning their first section title since 2012.

The Broncos, which finished 13-1 last season, want more.

“We had just been anxious,” said Clovis North senior running back McKay Madsen, who holds many Division I offers including Fresno State. “It’s a start, but just focusing on what we need to work on getting our team ready and building up these boys. Everybody’s game ready.”

Madsen and running back Jackson Cinfel were too tough for teams to handle and bring down because of their athleticism.

The Broncos’ defense was stout, too.

Clovis North hopes for more of the same, though they know they have teams coming after them beginning Friday at San Joaquin Memorial in the nonleague portion of the schedule.

“I think physically, we might be a little better overall,” Clovis North coach Mike Jacot said. “It’s been a little bit of a learning curve. We have more seniors and juniors than we had last year. I think we got a chance to be pretty good as long as we can learn from our mistakes and grow as a team.”

Clovis North defensive end Ross Cinfel agrees and wants to keep motivating his teammates.

After all, he knows that teams want to knock them off.

“I just got to get in their heads,” he said. “Hit them a little bit and let them know that they need to wake up and read their keys. We got to be physical.”
