What is next for Clovis West boys basketball after Vance Walberg joined Fresno State?
Vance Walberg is no longer the Clovis West boys basketball coach after he was named Saturday the Fresno State men’s basketball coach.
That left the Golden Eagles without a coach for a short time before the school named an interim coach.
That would be Tyrone Jackson, who was on Walberg’s staff for several seasons.
“We are happy that Tyrone Jackson will be the interim Head Coach for our program until a a decision is made. Tyrone embodies the definition of what it means to be a Golden Eagle,” Clovis West basketball wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Many are already speaking in favor of Jackson, who brings experience while learning under Walberg.
McLane High girls basketball coach Brian Duckworth also voiced support in replying to a post on X saying “needs to be permanent head coach!!!”

Walberg coached at Clovis West from 1989 to 2002 before moving up to Fresno City College, where he went 133-11 with a state championship in 2005. He returned to Clovis West in 2016 after being fired by the Sacramento Kings. He also was an assistant with the Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers.
Walberg has a record of 559-104 in 21 seasons at Clovis West, with 18 league championships. His overall record at the prep level is 697-195, according to Central Section historian Bob Barnett.
Jackson learned a lot from Walberg as a player and as a coach.
Jackson led the Golden Eagles to a 31-3 record in his senior year and 39-3 in the previous season.
He continued his playing career at Fresno City College before earning a scholarship at Arizona State where he played for two seasons.
