Roosevelt High fills football coaching position with a familiar face. ‘I’m all in’
Ricky McCoy had a lot of success while playing at Roosevelt High.
It paid off for him when he earned a scholarship to play at University of Washington before transferring to Fresno State.
He’s hoping that the continued success continues at his alma mater as Roosevelt named McCoy the head coach in January.
“It was an opportunity for me,” McCoy said. “Especially once I was done playing, I was ready to step up to the plate.”
McCoy takes over for interim coach Josh Kloster, who took over after the school and Dwayne Wright parted ways.
In fact, McCoy was on Wright’s staff after he played in the Indoor Football League for Marshawn Lynch’s Bay Area Panthers in 2022.
He then retired to begin his teaching and coaching career at Roosevelt.
“We are extremely proud to have Ricky McCoy as our new head coach of the Rough Riders football program,” principal Michael Allen said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and passion for the game, has already had a positive impact on our student-athletes, and has the potential to be a mainstay for our Roosevelt High School community for years to come.”
McCoy was an assistant the past two years and is a Resource Specialist Program teacher at Roosevelt.
He graduated from Roosevelt in 2015.
McCoy played tight end and defensive end at Roosevelt and helped the team to the second round of the Central Section Division IV playoffs.
He was listed as the No. 68 defensive tackle prospect in the nation by Scout.com and No. 30 by Rivals.com as the No. 30 tight end in the nation and No. 96 recruit in California.
McCoy said he’s looking forward to leading his alma mater after the Rough Riders finished the 2023 season 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the North Yosemite League.
“I have a great support system behind me,” he said. “Especially as a young guy, I’m not naive of the growth that is expected of me, but I’m all in. I’m a competitor. I love getting better, and that’s all I will look to do here.”
