Scooby-Doo is a big presence for the Mendota High School boys basketball team, getting at least a little credit from the coaching staff and players for turning the season around.

It began when the Aztecs won just three of their first seven games.

After a loss to Garza, the team went to a bowling alley.

There the squad noticed a claw machine, with a stuffed Scooby-Doo as one of the prizes.

One of the players was able to wrangle a Scooby out of the machine. He quickly became a team mascot, earning a prominent spot on the team’s bench during games.

How much luck has Scooby-Doo brought the Aztecs? Mendota has won 9 of 10 and is undefeated at 8-0 when wearing its home white jerseys.

It was more of the same Saturday at the Martin Luther King Jr. Showcase at Edison, where the Aztecs defeated Fowler 65-63 in overtime.

Aztecs coach Elijah Ray Clark said it’s a good thing they played the machine. The Aztecs are 12-2 overall with Scooby.

“It’s working, I guess,” he said.
