Masters look-ahead and results from the Central Section division wrestling tournaments
The road to California’s high school wrestling state meet reaches its penultimate round this weekend with Central Section Masters meets at Buchanan (boys) and Morro Bay (girls).
Besides crowning overall section champions in 14 individual weight classes and team standings, the section meets are qualifiers for the state meet, Feb. 23-25 at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.
Based on its long-running excellence, the Central Section qualifies 10 in each 40-wrestler weight bracket, same as the much-larger Southern Section. Central Section girls get four places in each 32-wrestler bracket.
Section division championships were held last week, with the Buchanan boys wInning Division I meet at Lemoore.
Four Bears won weight-class championships. Clovis was second and had six individual winners.
CalGrappler this week continues to rank Buchanan and Clovis Nos. 1-2 in the state and lists four section wrestlers as No. 1 in the state in their weight class: Buchanan freshman Joseph Toscano (126 pounds); Bakersfield senior Tye Monteiro (182); Clovis sophomore Mark Marin (195); and Bakersfield junior Michael Murrillo (220).
The boys Masters gets underway at 10 a.m. Friday and will conclude at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
The girls Masters takes place at 9 a.m. Saturday in Morro Bay, with the championship round starting at 5 p.m.
Top-rated girls include Paige Morales, Central (106); Arena Arias, Selma (116) and Jacklyn Green, Golden West (170).
