Fresno-area preps: Doc Buchanan wrestling highlights; The Bee’s basketball rankings

The defending state-champion Buchanan High wrestling team was dominant in the two-day 45th Doc Buchanan Invitational Jan. 6-7 at Clovis High.

The Bears won their fourth straight Doc B Invitational, led by Rocklin Zinkin and Joseph Toscano. Buchanan totaled 242.5 points, while Clovis placed sixth with 154.5 points.

Zinkin won his championship match over Abram Cline of Granite Hills-El Cajon, winning by a 6-3 decision at 109 pounds. Toscano followed with a 9-0 majority decision win over Bryce Luna of St. Francis in 129s.

Eleven Bears stood on the podium.

Those include Ray Harris Jr. (fourth, 123), Sloan Swan (third, 173), Kannon Campbell (third, 223), Devin Alexander (fifth, 148), Leo Contino (sixth, 163), Keanu Trelles (fifth, 198), Cisco Cabrera (eighth, 135), Jonathan Rocha (seventh, 185) and Alec Dansby (seventh, 288).

Also in the finals were two Clovis wrestlers: Nikade Zinkin, who fell to Isaiah Cortez of Gilroy (7-0, 123 pounds); and Dario Lemus, who lost by a 12-7 decision to Brock Mantanona of Palm Desert at 141.

Other Fresno-area wrestlers who placed in the Doc B Invitational:

Thunder Lewis, Clovis (third, 109); Adrien Reyes, Clovis (fourth, 173); Zach Limon, Clovis (third, 288); Joe Buck, Clovis (fifth, 163); Isaiah Morales, Lemoore (sixth, 288); Anthony Castillo, Central (eighth, 109); and Caiden Johnson, Edison (eighth, 223).

In December, Buchanan won the Zinkin Classic that was held at its own campus.

Boys basketball: Clovis West tops boys rankings

Tri-River Athletic Conference basketball starts this week, and the TRAC has four of the top 10 boys teams in The Bee’s Top 25 rankings led by Clovis West (17-1). The Golden Eagles’ lone loss is to Modesto Christian on Dec. 30.

Clovis West will open with a tough one, traveling to No. 2 Clovis North. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Clovis North.

Girls basketball: Clovis West looking strong

The Bee’s No. 1 girls basketball team is Clovis West (16-0). The Golden Eagles begin the TRAC at No. 18 Clovis North at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Clovis West has impressive wins this season against Our Lady of Good Counsel-Olney, Maryland 69-68; South Shore-Brooklyn, N.Y. 66-64 and Archbishop Carroll-Radnor, Pennsylvania 50-45.
