High school football playoffs: Big play helps Clovis West; Sunnyside gets home semifinal
Clovis West played Thursday without starting quarterback Ryan Markarian because he was tossed out of the regular-season finale two weeks ago.
No matter for the top-seeded Golden Eagles and Tyler Patrick.
Patrick zipped a pass to Marshel Sanders that turned into a 99-yard touchdown in the third quarter in a 24-21 victory over eighth-seeded Clovis in a Central Section Division I high school football quarterfinal at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Cougars made it interesting late, getting a touchdown when Deagan Rose connected on a pass to Jacob Saldate with 2:06 remaining.
Clovis’ onside kick try went out of bounds and the Golden Eagles ran out the clock.
Clovis West will next face No. 4 San Joaquin Memorial, a 28-21 winner over No. 5 Central.
